Juvenile Dependency

Juvenile Dependency

Dependency cases are initiated when children have been abandoned, neglected or abused by someone while in their parents’, guardian’s or custodian’s care, or cases where parents are unable or unwilling to care for their children.

Dependency cases can result in long-term foster care, guardianship proceedings, or termination of parental rights and adoption by a caring family. Dependency cases are filed pursuant to Welfare & Institutions Code Section 300. (Most juveniles in delinquency cases and parents in dependency cases are eligible for Court-appointed attorneys if they cannot afford their own attorneys.)
